Angolan Community in Hungary celebrates “4 April” with music, memory and hope
The Angolan community in Hungary gathered this Saturday, 5 April, in Budapest to celebrate the Day of Peace and National Reconciliation, commemorated on 04 April, in an event organised by the Embassy of Angola in that Central European country, “with the aim of continuing to evoke memories, reaffirm values, and project shared hopes.”
In an atmosphere marked by emotion, symbolism and cultural vitality, Angolans residing in Hungary actively engaged in a ceremony that combined solemnity, artistic expression and a strong sense of belonging.
Ambassador José Filipe, presently completing his term in Hungary, emphasised in his speech that, more than the end of the civil war 23 years ago, the “4 April” is, above all, “the reunion of Angolans with themselves, with their future, and with the collective sense of Nation”.
In a message focused on preserving peace as a living heritage, the diplomat stressed that “peace should not be regarded as an eternal gift, but as a daily commitment, built with responsibility, unity and hope”. He also sought to refocus the role of youth in national development: “More than just good students or exemplary professionals, Angola needs conscious, compassionate citizens committed to the greater cause of our people.”
The celebration continued into the evening with cultural performances that brought Angolan voices and rhythms to life. Guest Angolan musician Gelson Castro, accompanied by guitarist Tuka Virgílio and Angolan student Afonso Agostinho, moved the audience with an intimate and engaging performance, reinterpreting national musical themes and more. The cultural programme also featured members of the community with Kizomba and Semba performances by young Angolans and Hungarians.
In a year of particular symbolic significance — marking 50 years of National Independence and 50 years of the establishment of political and diplomatic relations between Angola and Hungary — the event stood as a gesture of affirmation of Angolan identity in a friendly nation.
