Margarida Izata accredited as Angola’s Ambassador to Hungary
Angola and Hungary reaffirmed on Monday, 16 June, their commitment to strengthening their friendship and broadening bilateral cooperation in various areas of mutual interest. The pledge was made during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Budapest, where Margarida Rosa da Silva Izata officially presented her Letters of Credence to Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok, accrediting her as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Angola to Hungary.
A career diplomat, Margarida Izata becomes the fifth Angolan Ambassador to serve in the Central European country. She succeeds Ambassador José Filipe and assumes the diplomatic post at a particularly symbolic moment, as both nations mark 50 years since the establishment of political and diplomatic relations, to be celebrated on 23 December this year.
During a meeting held on the sidelines of the accreditation ceremony, President Tamás Sulyok highlighted Angola’s role as a strategic partner on the African continent and reiterated Hungary’s interest in deepening cooperation in various sectors, including transport and security, where bilateral agreements are already in place. He also underlined the importance of education partnerships, particularly the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme, which grants up to 50 annual scholarships to Angolan students.
Ambassador Margarida Izata, in turn, stressed her commitment to an active and pragmatic diplomacy focused on tangible outcomes, noting that her mandate is aimed at advancing priority areas identified by Angola in its relationship with Hungary. She indicated that this cooperation could align with Hungary’s broader engagement with the African continent, leveraging Angola’s current role as Chair of the African Union.
Other areas of potential cooperation were also discussed, particularly in energy and water, agriculture, technology, and infrastructure.
With extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy, the new head of Angola’s diplomatic mission in Budapest previously served as Angola’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, Switzerland.
